For over 60 years players from around the globe have come to Montgomery to battle their tennis skills in the spring of every year. Jack Bushman is the judge of these battles and created the tournament. He was the captain of his tennis team in high school and his College team at Louisiana State University and became well known as “Mr. Tennis”. Jack Bushman is the most notable player in the Blue-Gray match-up history because he was the creator and for a while he was competing against other players. This tournament was created for college students looking to compete and make a name for themselves in the tennis world. The winner of the competition would earn cash prizes and also tryouts to more popular teams once they were to graduate college. Because of the rewards this tournament was created to target college students who are in their junior or senior year of college so that if they won they would be supplied with auditions so they could plan their future rather than students just starting college who would be there for a while. However, there are exceptions that judges make for exceptionally skilled players who wanted to enter the tournament. What’s 1 more click?

The Blue-Gray Football Christmas Classic was one we looked forward to every year. It joined some of the best players of the year from Division I football. Everyone put their rivalries aside, and simply played their best for the honor of being invited to participate; and because every professional football team, and agent, would be watching.

Montgomery, Alabama was host to this 64 year old tradition. The bowl became a nationally televised event on Christmas day in 1978. Some of the best football players of all time played in the Blue-Gray Christmas Classic such as Jerry Rice. The teams were comprised of the best players from teams that did not qualify for bowl games.

One of the classic moments of the Blue-Gray matchup was in 1999. The UAB kicker, Jake Arians, missed the 22-yard field goal as the clock ran out. This resulted with the most anti-climactic Blue-Gray game in its history leaving the score tied at 22-22. Everyone was a bit bewildered.

It is moments such as that 1999 game that leaves a little hole in our heart Christmas Day, since it has been cancelled. Why did this North-South game end? It came down to capitalism, which is interesting because the proceeds went to charity.

The Blue-Gray Football Classic began as an annual all-star college football game in 1939. It was held on Christmas Day in Alabama at Crampton Stadium. The game was not held in 2002, but was played again in 2003 in Troy, Alabama. That would be the end of the Blue-Gray Classic due to lack of sponsorship.

The Blue-Gray Classic was a competition between colleges in the former Confederacy, who wore white jerseys and colleges in the northern regions of the country who wore blue. Only seniors were allowed to compete in the games. It was their entrance into pro-ball and they were paid.

Because the Blue-Gray Classic was one of the first all-star games of the post-season and was usually played by athletes from smaller colleges, many of the athletes were first seen by pro scouts during this game. One notable player from the now defunct Blue-Gray Classic is the famous Jerry Rice who played in the 1984 game and was named Most Valuable Player.

64 Blue-Gray Classics were played. The Gray won 33 games to the Blue’s 29. Two games ended in a tie. Each game was hosted in Montgomery except for the 2003 game, which was played in Troy.

The Blue Gray Football Classic game has been a football tradition in college sports for almost a century in college football’s history as of today. The game was begun during the era of the Civil War, and has been played annually on Christmas Day (december 25th) for as long as the tradition has been going on. The Blue and Gray uniforms which are worn are worn in commemoration of both sides of the war (confederates and the patriots).

The game is deeply rooted with American history, and has become a tradition in the college sports world due to its meaning and the length of time it has been going on. NBC, the station which typically covers the game on Christmas Day, refused to televise the game for a period of five or six years, due to some issues which were geared towards racism, and towards not allowing African American players take part in the game.

The racial backlash occured early on in the games history, and since that time has not seen any problems of the nature since those years. The game is deeply rooted in both American History, and in the college sports world, for fans and players of the game alike.
